목소리가 달달해서 컨트리 느낌에 힐링송인 줄 알았는데. 뭔가 Radical Face라는 밴드 앨범이 좀 으시시하길래, 'Cult 쪽인가?' 하고 파보는데.

음악 장르는 Acoustic rock, Indie folk. Ben Cooper는 Singer-songwriter이고 여러 가지 음악 Project에 참여하고 있단다.  "The Family Tree"라는 시리즈로 앨범을 내고 있는데, 1800년부터 1950년까지 살았던 19세기 초자연적인 능력을 가진 가상의 가족 이야기를 하고 있다. _{The Family Tree trilogy was born, an ambitions, complex trilogy of albums telling the story of The Northcotes, a fictitious 19th Century family graced with paranormal abilities (seeing spirits, reanimating dead animals etc.).} 자기가 쓴 소설을 이 가상의 가족들의 캐릭터를 살려서 앨범으로 만들었다고 보면 되겠다.  "The Family Tree"의 앨범 시리즈는 4장인데, The Roots (2011), The leaves (2016), The Branches (2013), The Bastards (2015)의 소제목을 달고 있다. https://www.radicalface.com/

그중, The Family Tree The Bastards(2015)의 'Baptisms'는 개울이 흐르는 근처에 사는 Bailey와 그의 가장 친한 Jim. 두 친구의 이야기다. 근데 둘 다 죽은 이던가. _{The two boys, Jim and Bailey, from "Summer Skeletons" are still friends as adults. Bailey narrates this one. Though he still does not speak often, Bailey does his best to comfort his friend as they sit and fish beside the creek near their home.} 여하튼. 멜로디가 좋은데 가사는 뭔가 어둡다. 신을 부정하는 느낌이랄까. 

 

실제로 Ben Cooper는 형제가 9명이나 되고, 14살에 게이로 밝혔다가 의붓아버지 집에서 내쫓김을 당했고. 자신의 조카를 의붓아버지가 성적으로 학대했다고 재판에 서기도 했고, 그 조카를 자신이 입양하기도 했다. 2015년에 낸 The Family Tree The Bastards 앨범 속의 'The Mute'가 그 조카에 대한 노래.

 

그 스스로 정서적으로 소외된 현실을 많이 담아내다 보니 노래가 알고 보면 그닥 희망차진 않다. 나름 좋아하는 'We All Go the Same'이란 노래도 어떻게 살건 죽는다는 건 모두 같다는 가사다.

파란만장 배경을 알고 보니, 그의 음악이 '달달'이 아니라 '우울'이었구나 싶다.

여튼, 그래도 악마를 숭배하는 Cult 음악이 아니어서 다행이라고나 할까. 아닌가.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'd always wanted to write a family saga. Books like "East of Eden" have long been influences, and having such a large/strange/twisted family history myself, it seemed like a topic I could put a lot into. -Ben Cooper

 

The Family Tree :The Roots(2011)

names, a pound of flesh, family portrait, black eyes, severus and stone, the moon is down, ghost towns, kin, the dead waltz, always gold, mountains.

 

 

the beginning of the family tree. all the songs and stories in the series stem from this one. Narrated by William Northcote, it tells of his mother's death during his childbirth, his father's breakdown and eventual demise, and the motherly role that his older sister, Victoria, stepped into at a young age.
